Guidance and documents for the application process for Inbound students
APPLICATION FOR A DANISH RESIDENCE PERMIT (updated June 2025)
Please see last sections below if going to Greenland or Faroe Islands or if holding an EU passport.
It is mandatory for all students coming to Denmark for more than 90 days to apply (or register) for a residence permit.
Please be sure to read all the material before starting the process – also when next steps are initiated – and have an adult to support you.
Even if most students are permitted to enter Denmark on a tourist visa, students from certain countries will require a visa before entering Denmark. You can find the exact list at https://www.nyidanmark.dk/de-DE/Words-and-concepts/US/Visum/Countries-w… - these students must get the residence permit before travelling to Denmark, and will be guided from the Multi District of Denmark.
Firstly, please inform the Multi District of Denmark if you also have a European passport (you must have a physical passport valid +3 months after end of exchange) – as you can then travel to Denmark as a European and need to follow a different process.
Secondly, please prepare for the residence permit application – by following this guideline:
As per the guideline, the following documents are needed - be sure to download, fill in, scan and have them ready for the residence permit application as described in the “preparation guideline” (see above):
Thirdly, please follow instruction as they are shared.
Rotary Multi district of Denmark will later share detailed information on the application process, and how you proceed – do not start on your own or before you have received specific information on how to proceed
The application process itself will for most Inbound students to Denmark be started approximately 1-2 months ahead of assigned week of arrival. As part of this, you must pay a fee to the Danish Authority for the handling of the application – and include documentation of the paid fee (is adjust yearly, but is about DKK 2.300). More information will come about this.
The process has been adjusted for students Inbound to Denmark, and if coming from a visa-free country you will have biometrics registered in Denmark, which the host club will support in booking time for (can be booked from approx.1 month before your arrival in Denmark).
Fourtly, please be aware of timelines which Rotary Denmark will inform you about.
The residence permit application process has a few deadlines, which must be kept or the process will have to be started again (and there is a risk you have to pay the fee again). I.e., you must login to the residence permit application within 14 days of receiving the login details – or a new login has to be created by the Multi district of Denmark.
Other things relevant – which you also will receive more information about:
Once the process has been started - if any documentation has been missed in the application, or you need to send more information to the Danish Authority handling the residence permit applications, please always use this link: http://www.newtodenmark.dk/SIRI-contactform. And be sure you refer to the case Order ID on which you made the payment.
Use the option: “I have a specific case and need to answer a letter from SIRI, send documentation or want to ask a question,”...
If travelling to Denmark on a tourist visa, you must have submitted your online residence permit application shortly before leaving home (and bring print of all documents with you) - and we recommend that you have a return ticket within three months to avoid discussions at European airports (this is however not a requirement).
Going to Greenland or Faroe Islands?
Students going to the Faroe Islands or Greenland will have a special process, and will need a visa grated before being allowed to enter the countries.
Please still make the same preparations, and Rotary Denmark will still initiate the application process in close collaboration with your host club.
Please be sure to be in dialogue with your Host Club for the correct process.
Are you an EU-Citizen with a valid passport
If you hold a European passport, the registration process is different - it is not an application but a registration process.
You must still make the same preparations.
Once you arrive the host club will support you in filling out the needed application for registration, and get a time booked at the Danish Authority. There is no fee for holders of (most) European passports.
